St. Vincent

"Cruel" video from Strange Mercy - a cool and dark music video with this strange comical quality.

I went the St. Vincent show last week Thursday with a couple of lovely friends at the Neptune Theater in Seattle (pretty much my backyard, lucky me). After listening to a few songs off of her new album, Strange Mercy, which she recorded most of here in Seattle actually for her "loneliness project" (more info on that here:  http://www.seattleweekly.com/2011-10-12/music/st-vincent-s-seattle/), I decided that I needed to go to this show. I couldn't have been more right. The album as amazing as it is, in my opinion doesn't compare to her live show.

Probably one of my favorite pieces she played (although it's ridiculously hard to choose!) is Just the Same but Brand New filmed that night by some dude, thanks some dude:

The incredible things she did with her voice on this song blew me away.

In general I'm loving this stranger's footage from the show:

"Your Lips Are Red" showed off Annie's more bad-assedness and I loved it. At moments she seemed so darling, so delicious, then she gets New York on us and goes into this rock goddess mode! I couldn't get enough of this performance. Everyone I spoke to didn't want the night to end, we were all transported to this blissful world, Annie Clark's blissful world, where she had you swaying, entranced one moment and the next your hips started doing some embarrassing things, but you couldn't stop and you didn't mind. She's sweet and savory crepes. She's the best of both worlds; her softer feminine songs like "Dilettante" contrasted sexily with her rougher songs like "She is Beyond Good and Evil", a cover of the original song by The Pop.

Her fretwork whilst singing lyrics that actually contrasted musically with most riffs was more than impressive. I hope she has another show in Seattle soon now that she calls it her home away from home, because I'm still high off her show a week ago and I want to go back that land of light shows, leather shorts, and red lips.
